Here are a few combat methods that the members
have sent in: You can print this page out and
read it when the need arises if you like. Some
great ways to do battle. Thanks everyone:) and

Jude's tips for winning battles:

  1. I recognize that it will just come back even if I smoke.
    So I don't smoke.

  2. Mantra: Smoking is not an option.
    Smoking is not an option.
    Smoking is not an option...

  3. Put on some good smelling scent - especially
    hand lotion and spend a long time rubbing it
    in and reminding yourself how good you smell.

  4. Put a sign on your screen saver:
    "Jude smells SO good."


Debbie's tips for winning battles:


  1. Put on some music and relax or dance.

  2. Play with a child.

  3. Get on the computer and go to a relaxing
    insightful site.


Joan's tips for winning battles:


  1. Reach for a notebook and pen.

  2. Call a friend.

  3. Have pictures or a video handy of what cigarettes
    are made of and what it does to you.


Tricia's tips for winning battles:


  1. Get up and go into another room and do something.

  2. Brush your teeth (carry a travel brush and toothpaste)

  3. Suck on cinnamon sticks

  4. Suck on a straw.

  5. Sing as bad as you can the dumbest song you know.
    It'll give you the giggles.

  6. Go buy yourself a reward for not smoking.


Julie's tips for winning battles:


  1. Take a long hot bath - I haven't found
    an easy way to smoke with wet hands!!!!!

  2. Knit, crochet, type, spin, weave, fingerpaint,
    anything to give the hands something else to do.

  3. Say to yourself "First I'm going to do ______,
    then I'll think about it." By the time you've finished,
    the urge has passed.


Lacy 's tips for winning battles:


  1. Suck on sugar-free mints or hard candies.

  2. Run-in-place.

  3. Do 15 to 25 jumping jacks.

  4. Clean out a closet.

  5. Go for a bike ride.

  6. Mend some clothes (sew on buttons, iron on a patch).

  7. Organize a chest of drawers.

  8. Clean out the refridgerator.


Shauna's tips for winning battles:


  1. Drink water.

  2. Close your eyes and breath deeply.
    (in through the nose and out the mouth)

  3. Count to 20.

  4. Positive self talk.

  5. Clean your house.

  6. Work in the garden.

  7. Chew gum.

  8. Go for a walk and take note of the fresh air.
